Windscreen Crack Repair by Resin Injection — Chips & Cracks

A stone kicked up by a passing vehicle leaves a mark just a few millimetres wide. It doesn’t block your view, it doesn’t make a sound, it doesn’t look urgent. Which is exactly why it gets ignored.

That mark, however, is a small discontinuity in the structure of the glass, waiting for the right conditions to spread: a sudden change in temperature, a jolt on rough road surface, stress from the body flexing. That’s when the chip turns into a crack that “runs” across the entire windscreen — and repair is no longer an option.

Why buses are more exposed

The surface area of a bus windscreen is many times larger than that of a passenger car. More surface area statistically means more stone impacts, especially on vehicles running daily intercity routes. It also means greater mechanical stress on the glass itself — so any damage develops faster.

The injection method

At an early stage of damage — a chip, a half-moon crack, a bullseye — the damage is repaired by injecting a specialised resin:

1. Cleaning and removing air and moisture from inside the damaged area.
2. Injecting resin under pressure so it fully fills every branch of the crack.
3. Curing (hardening) the resin with ultraviolet light.
4. Polishing and finishing the surface.

The result: the damage stops spreading, the glass’s original strength is restored, and the mark becomes visually barely noticeable.

Time is everything

The success of the repair depends directly on how much time has passed between the damage occurring and the repair itself. The longer the chip stays open, the more dust, moisture and windscreen-washer residue gets into it — all of which prevent the resin from bonding properly and leave a permanent mark.

In practice: call us as soon as you spot the damage. A repair done the same week gives an almost invisible result. One done three months later is far worse — if it’s still repairable at all.

When it can’t be repaired

Injection has its limits. Extensive damage, a crack that has reached the edge of the glass, or damage sitting exactly in the driver’s line of sight sometimes requires replacement. We’ll tell you plainly — there’s no reason for us to carry out a repair that won’t hold.
